Last week, we went to Amsterdam. And here comes my review. Transportation = Amazing. I’ve never seen so many forms of it in one place. There’s so many different kinds of trains, hi speed, double decker, one’s that look like those scarily, huge freightliner trains and the driver sits at the top! The streets are deadly with trams coming round every corner, that’s if you’ve not been taken down by a biker or scooter! There’s roads for cars, bikes and I found it hard to find a places for pedestrians to walk!
However, it was all part of the fun. Unfortunately, this is where the fun of Amsterdam stopped. Other than the sex museum and red light district, I didn’t find it a place of any particular fascination. The galleries and museums are so expensive and to be quite frank, not that great.
Speaking of frank, Our hotel was on the same street as that of the house Ann Frank was hiding in. The queue was like that scene in the labyrinth, when Sarah finds herself in an alley way that appears to have no beginning nor end. And since we were only there for 2 nights, and wanted to see as much as possible, it wasn’t something I was willing to fit in. Although, I was disappointed by the exterior, it didn’t look like the rest of the beautiful houses that lined the canals of the city, but rather a glass exhibition. Uncool.
So apart from being robbed blind to get into galleries and museums, the food was… fries. And yes they are great fries, but I wanted something a little more…Dutch. So we tried the food venders, deep fried, processed, nothingness. The best food I ate there had to be the pancake from small talk, and the cheese shop in a place called Haarlem. (Outside of Amsterdam) I’ll give them that.
I very much enjoyed the red light district. Beautiful girls on show, some not so beautiful, but all very charismatic and wonderful. The boyfriend was reluctant to look any of them directly in the eye. I was fascinated with them and wondered if they often or ever get women knocking on their windows? We were tempted to knock on and ask how much for a couple.
All that said, at least I can cross Amsterdam off my list.
